Anatomical and Functional Results of Macular Hole Retinal Detachment Surgery in Patients With High Myopia and Posterior Staphyloma Treated With Perfluoropropane Gas or Silicone Oil

Abstract: C3F8 and internal limiting membrane peeling could represent the most effective strategy in highly myopic patients with macular hole retinal detachment. Other tamponade agents must be investigated.

“…Gas or Silicone Oil? According to Mancino et al [44], C 3 F 8 tamponade after vitrectomy and ILM peeling offers better results, both functional and anatomic, than silicone oil. Silicone oil offers some advantages, such as faster visual recovery and a long-acting tamponade effect, and is therefore preferred for patients who are unable to remain in a facedown position.…”

“…Although silicone oil was introduced in the initial surgery to avoid the need for face-down positioning, 21 it is necessary to remove the silicone oil afterward, and longterm retinal toxicity cannot be ignored. 18,22,23 Increasing the successful rate of retinal attachment and hole closure and decreasing the duration that patients are in a prone position are the main goals of MHRD repair.…”

“…Since then, silicone oil (SO) has been widely used in the management of different vitreoretinal conditions, especially in patients who are not candidates to receive gas endotamponade, including complicated RD associated with proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR), giant retinal tears, proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), trauma, macular-hole surgery (MH), and simple primary rhegmatogenous RD (RRD) [2][3][4][5][6].…”
