Anatomical observations of the development of the pituitary capsule

Abstract: A morphological study on the development of the pituitary capsule is reported, based on serial or step-sections of 56 pituitary glands from human embryos and fetuses ranging in gestational age from 4 to 40 weeks. Formation of the pituitary capsule is preceded at a very early embryonic stage by mesenchymal cell proliferation around Rathke's pouch when it forms the primitive adenohypophysis. The proportionally large adenohypophysis wraps around the neurohypophysis as it grows down from the diencephalon. Therefor… Show more

“…There is no consensus on nomenclature for this structure; some reports have referred to a distinct MWCS (Ciric, 1977;Chi and Lee, 1980;Chacko et al, 2003), whereas others have wrongly identified the pituitary capsule as the MWCS (Yokoyama et al, 2001). In all 18 of our specimens (anatomic and histological observations), we observed a definite plane of cleavage between the pituitary gland capsule and the MWCS.…”

“…A variety of different surgical approaches to this area have been described (Fahlbusch and Buchfelder, 1988;Origitano et al, 1992;Fraioli et al, 1995;Dolenc, 1997;Kitano and Taneda, 2001;Liu et al, 2001;Day, 2003), however, only a few studies have focused on the medial venous space and the medial wall of the CS (MWCS). The observations documented in these latter reports have been inconsistent (Chi and Lee, 1980;Inoue et al, 1990;Knosp et al, 1993;Ciric, 1997;Kehrli et al, 1998;Domingues et al, 1999;Yokoyama et al, 2001).…”

“…These findings in the adult cadaver are supported by observations on the human embryo and fetus which indicated that the fibrous capsule of the adult pituitary gland has multiple origins. 11,12 CONCLUSION The nature of the medial wall of the cavernous sinus may play a significant role in determining the direction of growth of pituitary adenomas and in planning pituitary surgery. This study indicates that the medial wall of the cavernous sinus consists of both the meningeal dura and weblike loose fibrous network, which are located at the anterosuperior and posteroinferior aspects, respectively.…”

“…In the literature, different results of the anatomic studies have been published about the structure of the CS medial wall. Studies on the structure of the medial wall were reported as one layer by some authors, as two layers in another or thin, loose and histological defects by the other (8,9,14,15,26,28,30). Thus, some authors reported that tumour histology is responsible for CS invasion while some authors insist on histological defects of the medial wall (15,16,25,27,29).…”
