Anatomical UV Exposure in French Outdoor Workers

Abstract: This study highlights the role of individual factors in anatomical exposure and ranks the most exposed body parts and outdoor occupations. Prevention messages should put emphasis on spring exposure, which is an important contributor to the yearly dose.

“…Outdoor workers, including most ecological workers, spend time outdoors increasing exposure to ultraviolet light [41]. Since the ecological workers described in this paper are mainly outdoors working with natural and managed ecosystems, UV exposure is an occupational risk, predisposing such workers to higher rates of both basal and squamous cell carcinoma compared with indoor workers [42, 43]].…”

“…First of all, due to various technical and organizational problems, we missed a relevant number of measurements in the monitored month but considering the 3 workers and the 23 working days available, we were able to cover 91% of the working days targeted. The sample size of only three workers is very small, but we believe that despite this limitation, providing continuous personal UV exposure data of real workers during a one-month period can be important to build knowledge on different patterns of real exposure of outdoor workers, in addition to existing studies adopting specific models [13,[32][33][34][35][36] or applying dosimeters on mannequins [37,38].…”

“…Traditional clothing has light weight, less physical stress, improved breathability, improved comfort, however, it has a reduced protection against pathogen and effect of UV rays on human skin depends on the intensity of UV rays, duration of exposure and whether the skin was protected or not [40]. Damage caused by the UV exposure is cumulative and builds up over the years [41]. Apart from the solar UV radiation, artificial UVR sources such as xenon arc or germicidal lamp, UVR emission from certain welding arc are significant.…”
