Anatomical variations of the carotid bifurcation: implications for digital subtraction angiography and ultrasonography

Abstract: Intravenous digital subtraction angiography was used to determine prospectively the positional variations of the common carotid bifurcation in 100 consecutive patients with clinically suspected arteriosclerotic disease. The most common position (97/200, 48.5%) of the external carotid artery was anteromedial to the internal carotid artery. Position of the external carotid artery anterolateral to the internal carotid artery was noted in 26/200 (13%) bifurcations, but this anatomical variant was more common on th… Show more

“…Previous studies reported this standard position in 50% of cases to 70% cases. 1,11,12,19 We did not find any reversal of position of ICA and ECA though such case has been reported in literature. 12 In a doppler scan based study by Prendes JL et al, posrterolateral position of the ECA was noted in 5.3% of whereas in this study, it was found only in 2 cases (2.04%).…”

“…introduction the relations and patterns of branching of the extra-cranial carotid arteries show inter-population variations. the external carotid artery may be positioned anterolateral to the internal carotid in up to half of necks (1,2). cases of common linguothyroid, linguofacial and occipito-auricular trunks have been reported (3).…”

“…In 7% of cases the right external carotid artery is placed laterally from the left internal carotid artery. This positional variation is described in 4.3 -15% of examinees in papers published by Prendes et al, 4 Ueda et al, 5 Bussak et al, 6 Trigaus et al, 7 James 8 and Ito et al 9 Symmetric (bilateral) lateral position of external carotid artery in relation to internal carotid artery was found in 2% of cases. Divergent position, where internal carotid artery (medially) and external carotid artery (laterally) go away from each other was also found in 1% of cases.…”

“…Variations of mutual positions of these blood vessels also exist, when external carotid artery can be placed either laterally and backward, or laterally and frontaly in relation to the internal carotid artery. 4,5,6,7 The objective of this research was to investigate mutual relation of the initial parts of the internal carotid artery and external carotid artery, as well as the height of crossing of these blood vessels.…”
