“…Jacknifed standard errors are provided in parenthesis. Values provided in bold are significant at a = 0.05 PL petiole length, PD petiole diameter, LL leaf length, LW leaf width, SD shoot diameter, LA leaf area, Height plant height, LN leaf number, LM leaf mass, RM root mass, TM total mass, SLA specific leaf area availability, particularly in response to shading by neighbours, appears common in many species of terrestrial plants (Casal et al 1994;Ballaré et al 1995Ballaré et al , 1997Smith 1982;Smith and Whitelam 1997). Shaded plants experience a reduced red to far-red light ratio compared with individuals exposed to full sun (Smith 1982;van Hinsberg and van Tienderen 1997).…”

“…Shaded plants experience a reduced red to far-red light ratio compared with individuals exposed to full sun (Smith 1982;van Hinsberg and van Tienderen 1997). This cue for light competition triggers a cascade of phenotypic responses including an increase in functional traits such as petiole length, leaf length and width, SLA and height and a decrease in traits such as stem diameter, root mass and the number of leaves produced (Casal et al 1994;Ballaré et al 1995Ballaré et al , 1997Smith 1982;Smith and Whitelam 1997). The contribution of each plant trait to PC2 (see Table 1) suggests that the response shown by L. bonariense to a low light environment is largely consistent with this typical shade avoidance syndrome.…”

“…DELLA proteins by both the receptors to strengthen the response after obtaining contingent information is also another point showing similarity between phytochrome and UV-B mediated signalling. Several researchers [130,131,132] have also suggested that entailing fitness cost under low R:FR might have led UVR8 to control the responses under canopy. All these similarities suggests towards the evolution of complex photoreceptor UVR8 from the other photoreceptors and thus, there is need of finding the missing link.…”

“…The rate of extension growth decreases when the upper region of the hypocotyl becomes exposed to light. A refined adjustment of hypocotyl length is important because if it is too short the foliage can be easily covered even by weak disturbances of the soil and if the hypocotyl is too long the shoot can be damaged by the excessive exposure to wind impact (Casal et al, 1994).…”
