Culture, heritage looting, and tourism: A text mining review approach

Tourism scholars have been devoted to exploring the significance of cultural heritage in generating economic, environmental, and social values. However, limited efforts were found to verify potential threats that demolish these values such as looting issue in the global heritage tourism industry. Therefore, this study has reviewed extant publications to demonstrate the potential emerged textual clusters discussed by previous studies. It also summarized the network distribution of articles journals and authors’ affiliations to capture the mobility and diversity with a focus on the business and tourism management field. Hence, the core clusters discovered were related to heritage destruction, public access, world heritage, human rights, cultural heritage preservation, and protection of cultural heritage in the event. The results have established theoretical insights and research agendas for future tourism studies, while it determined critical drawbacks in employing technology tools including virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence for cultural heritage preservation/protection.

In August 1992, the American multinational Coca Cola launched a n ew advertising campaign in Italy. The advertisement used, showed the Greek Parthenon. The commercial artist had replaced the temple's original fluted baseless columns with columns resembling the world's most famous bottle. Whereas it took the Greeks almost 180 years to launch a protest against the theft of the sculptures of the Parthenon by Lord Elgin, their reaction was now of another order. The tasteless representation infuriated the national archaeological authorities. As these were preparing to sue, Coca Cola offered its excuses to the Greek government.

The thesis talks about images in social life. Mostly, I try to circumscribe the work of painters whose experiences established relations with the world of traveling, nature representation and the iconography of urban environments. It's organized in two parts. The first one explores the relations between perception and history. They are presented in a discussion around the development of the landscape concept in visual arts and its implications with the society itself. This is in order to point out the significance of images as mediation objects between society and nature. The theoretical point of view arises from this visual material and refers to the possibilities of an empirical phenomenology, particularly the concept of engagement. The second part follows the study of images in some artists communities, mostly the touristic cities in Brazil where painting activity is relevant: Ouro Preto and Paraty. The investigation area has been built around three main lines concerning the relations from psychology to images: images as illustrations of psychological knowledge; images as public documents; and images as a visual method. This conjunction invites for a reflection about the interpretation of images in social life. A particular methodology emerges from the study of image phenomenon in social psychology. First of all, it respects an interdisciplinary field which is built during the research between the history of perception and the aesthetic experience. That means it brings to social psychological debates historians and aestheticians. The method leads to the understanding of those images based on the concept of mimesis, and its contributions for social psychology nowadays. In the end the main categories of landscape and nature perception reveal the social experience of picturesque in Brazilian recent history. As a whole the thesis proposes an interdisciplinary approach to contribute for a dialogue between psychology and humanities to understanding of social experience based on images phenomena.
