Ancient degraded document image binarization based on texture features

Abstract: In this paper, we present a promising method for binarization of historical and degraded document images, based on texture features. The proposed method is an adaptive threshold-based. This latter is computed by using a descriptor based on a co-occurrence matrix. The proposed method is tested objectively, using DIBCO dataset degraded documents and subjectively, using a set of ancient degraded documents provided by a national library. The results are satisfactory and promising, and present an improvement to cla… Show more

“…high noise, poor contrast, low illuminations, spots and patches, etc) -the images' characteristics are not leveraged. On the other hand, in local thresholding methods, the threshold values are determined locally either pixel by pixel (Kasmin et al, 2017;Niblack, 1985;Sehad et al, 2013) or region by region (Neves and Mello, 2011;Pai et al, 2010;Tung and Wu, 2017). Then, a specified region can have a threshold value that is changed from region to region according to the threshold candidate selection for a given area.…”

“…Secondly, a wide range of typewritten documents continue to last only as carbon copies, etched on an extremely squeaky paper (Japanese paper) possessing a prominent texture. As a result of the machine-driven nature held by the typing process (where there is need to press the key harder in order for the printing to take place on the original and carbon copy), most carbon copies appear blurry [ 18 ]. Issues like repeated use and ageing, tears, stains, rust from paperclips, punch holes, disintegration of parts of documents, and discoloration negatively impact historical typewritten documents.…”

“…The recent pixel is processed focused around the framework of co-event by the scriptor. The texture based technique is tested on the basis of few objects, by making use of DIBCO dataset degraded and badly illuminated color documents and it used a set of old degraded document gave by a library [1].…”
