Ancient Reperformances of Sophocles

Abstract: Abstract:This chapter examines the evidence for early reperformances of Sophocles’ plays in the fifth and fourth centuries BC, making use of literary, inscriptional, and iconographical evidence to show the importance of the reperformance tradition for his plays in these early stages of their transmission, both in Attica and elsewhere in the Greek world.

Stinton (1990) 471 denies the possibility of a relationship between the two chariot races, but see the sensible rebuttal of Finglass (2007) 302. 33 Finglass (2007) 302; thus also, for example, Grossardt (1998) 327-28, March (2001) 172, Sabiani (2018) 155, Dunn et al (2019 252.…”

“…7 . 8 For the evidence see Fantuzzi (2016); much of the discussion of Sophoclean reperformance in Finglass (2015a) can also be applied to Euripides. 9 In Aristophanes' Frogs Dionysus is said to have been reading Euripides' Andromeda on board a ship in 405, seven years after its first performance in 412.…”

“…Because of this prestige, it is likely that, even if Sophocles himself did not travel beyond Attica, performances of his plays were taking place around the Mediterranean already during his lifetime, and it is certain that this was happening in the fourth century (Finglass 2015, Stewart 2017. Indeed, the desire of rulers outside Athens for him to come demonstrates the growth of his reputation and thus the long reach of his plays.…”
