Two important Proterozoic metasedimentary sequences, the Rio Preto and Santo Onofre Groups, crop out along the northwestern margin of the São Francisco craton and in northern Paramirim corridor, respectively. The Rio Preto Group, involved in the eponymous fold-thrust belt along the northwestern cratonic boundary, comprises the Formosa (garnet schist, quartz-mica schist, quartzite, chlorite-sericite schist and ferriferous quartz schist) and Canabravinha (quartzite, micaceous quartzite, metarhytmite, phylite, schist and metaturbidite) formations. The Santo Onofre Group occurs exclusively in the Paramirim corridor, and is composed of quartzite and minor carbonaceous or Mn-rich phylite. These units record sedimentation in shallow to deep-water marine settings related to rift basins, and were deformed and metamorphosed under greenschist facies conditions during the Brasiliano orogeny. Here we present 427 new detrital zircon U-Pb ages, which constrain the maximum depositional ages of ca. 971 Ma for the Santo Onofre Group, ca. 912 Ma for the Canabravinha Formation, and ca. 965 Ma for the Formosa Formation of the Rio Preto Group. Our data suggests that the Santo Onofre and the Rio Preto Groups accumulated in two distinct basin settings. The latter, composed mostly of sandy rocks, would represent a relatively stable, shallow-marine shelf environment. The Rio Preto Group, with metadiamictite, quartzite, pelitic and rhythmitic rocks, represents a shallow to deep marine environment influenced by gravity flows. Both groups were probably deposited in the Late Tonian, and are potential correlatives of the lower (pre-glacial) units of the Macaú-bas Group of the Araçuaí belt. USP, Sér. cient., São Paulo, v. 15, n. 1, p. 55-93, Março 2015 Resumo O Sistema Riacho do Pontal (SRP) é a parte central de um desenvolvimento orogênico neoproterozoico na periferia norte do Cráton do São Francisco (CSF), de nordeste (Faixa Sergipana) para noroeste (Faixa Rio Preto). O embasamento do antepaís (CSF) e do além-país (Morro do Estreito-Icaiçara) são constituídos em parte por rochas arqueanas, e desse terreno para a zona interna há registros de supracrustais e ortognaisses do Toniano (Ciclo Cariris Velhos?). O SRP apresenta notório zoneamento de norte para sul: além-país; zona interna (litotipos terrígenos); zona central (marcadas por rochas do assoalho oceânico); zona externa (litotipos terrígenos) e o domínio cratônico (CSF), com a presença de largo (> 200 km) foreland thrust and fold belt, mais para o sul, formado pela cobertura pelítico-carbonática do CSF. A deformação é intensa e apresenta vergência voltada para sul e sudeste, com dobras recumbentes e deitadas, falhas inversas e de empurrão, nappes e particularmente o registro de algumas klippen sobre o embasamento do CSF. O metamorfismo regional é geralmente na fácies anfibolito, com retrogressões locais a fácies xisto verde. Este trabalho apresenta uma série de determinações geocronológicas (métodos Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd e U-Pb) de praticamente todos os litotipos de embasamento, das supracrustais e dos granitos sincolisionais associados. Foram discriminados um substrato arqueano (além-país, idades neoarqueanas entre 2740 -2624 Ma) e duas faixas meta-vulcanossedimentares com granitoides inseridos do Neoproterozoico, uma do Eotoniano (980 -940 Ma) e outra do limite Criogeniano -Ediacarano (ca. 635 Ma). Um ensaio preliminar da evolução geotectônica do SRP é esboçado em termos "wilsonianos" para essa porção mais sul-ocidental da Província Borborema, atribuída a um sistema regional ramificado de orógenos.Palavras-chave: Sistema Riacho do Pontal; Província Borborema; Neoproterozoico; Toniano; Evolução tectônica. AbstractThe Riacho do Pontal System (RPS) is just the central part of a long Neoproterozoic orogenic development placed at the northern periphery of the São Francisco Craton (SFC), from northeast (Sergipano belt) to southwest (Rio Preto belt). C-isotope and 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values for five carbonate successions from the São Caetano Complex, northeastern Brazil, were used to constrain their depositional age and to determine large variations in the C-and Srisotopic composition of seawater under the framework of global tectonic events. Three C-isotope stages were identified from base to top in a composed chemostratigraphic section: (1) The C-and Sr-chemostratigraphic pathways permit to state: (a) the C-and Sr-isotope secular curves registered primary fluctuations of the isotope composition of seawater during late Mesoproterozoic-early Neoproterozoic transition in the Borborema Province, and (b) onset of the Cariris Velhos/Greenville cycle, widespread oceanic rifting, continental magmatic arc formation and onset of the agglutination of Rodinia supercontinent, mostly controlled the C-and Sr-isotope composition of seawater during the C-isotope stages 1, 2 and 3.
