Androgens are Fundamental in the Maintenance of Male Sexual Health

Abstract: The presence of a sufficient amount of androgens is essential for adequate sexual function in men. Gonadal hormones profoundly affect cognitive functions and, therefore, are fundamental in maintaining sexual desire. The earliest manifestation of hypogonadism is diminished libido. Furthermore, androgens also act peripherally, maintaining the integrity of penile structures and facilitating the erectile mechanisms. Severe androgen deficiency results in anatomical and hemodynamic changes leading to erectile dysfun… Show more

“…In addition to their role in male fertility, androgens are also essential for male sexual health and libido (67). It is not uncommon for males treated with antidiabetic drugs (metformin or pioglitazone) to exhibit decreased libido and fertility, as these drugs suppress testosterone levels in adults (68,69).…”

“…Furthermore, androgens also act peripherally, maintaining the integrity of penile structures and facilitating the erectile mechanisms. 39 Androgen has a role in the regulation of intrapenile vasodilatation. 40 In the present study, 85.7% of T2DM patients with LST had ED versus 31% of those with normal TT.…”

“…Sufficient levels of androgens are crucial for erectile function. Androgens act peripherally, influencing erectile mechanisms by upholding the integrity of penile structures and regulating vasodilation in the penis ( 87 ). Two comprehensive meta-analyses, encompassing 850 diabetic men and 2000 non-diabetic individuals ( 88 ), as well as 1,822 diabetic men and 10,009 non-diabetic individuals, revealed markedly lower total testosterone levels in diabetic men compared to controls ( 89 ).…”
