Android mobile application for wildfire reporting and monitoring

Abstract: Peat fires cause major environmental problems in Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia and threaten human health and effect the social-economic sector. The lack of peat fire detection systems is one factor that causing these reoccurring fires. Therefore, in this study, we develop an Android mobile platform application and a web-based application to support the citizen-volunteers who want to contribute wildfires reports, and the decision-makers who wish to collect, visualize, and evaluate these wildfires repor… Show more

“…The application also includes maps of current fires, new reports on the situation and weather within the radius of forest fires, as well as current news about forest fires. The newest features of the application include location information from the "Map Tools" menu, which can be clicked to quickly access the pop-up window with time zone, address, and latitude/longitude [27].…”

“…Still, these sensors act independently as parameter readings which require operator supervision in determining the occurrence of a fire hazard in the forest, The use of a machine learning approach with the supporting vector machine (SVM) method and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) using gas-based sensors such as metal oxide sensors, electrochemical sensors, temperature sensors, and humidity, shows increased accuracy in the use of machine learning based on sensor fusion and gas parameter correlation in fire detection systems, the use of a barometer to measure air pressure around the fire area as a fire extinguisher, and the use of particulate-matter sensors to detect fires in wild forests [7]- [10]. The use of parameters such as heat, smoke and flame are also used as decision-making parameters in the sprinkler and alerting process [11], [12], and android based application with global positioning systems is also used for wildfire reporting and monitoring system [13]. The diversity of sensor types used as parameter reading instruments in early fire prevention systems has led to increased complexity in system design and the selection process of sensor components.…”

“…Global navigation satellite system (GNSS) comprised of a group of satellites that generate and transmit positioning, timing, and navigation data from space to connected receivers or devices on earth. GNSSs were used in various applications such as locating potential forest fires [1]; space surveillance and tracking system [2]; observation of coastal tides [3]; cadastral surveying [4] and localization and navigation system [5]. In addition to GNSS, simultaneous localization and mapping systems (SLAM) [6]- [8] and indoor localization and navigation systems [9]- [10] were developed for localization and navigation systems.…”
