Anestesia regional en procedimientos ortopédicos electivos

Abstract

The use of general anesthesia for surgery on the thoracic and pelvic limbs can present challenges such as the adequate control of intraoperative and postoperative anesthesia and a high use of intravenous opioids that can expose the patient to additional complications such as nausea and/or postoperative vomiting and even respiratory depression. A useful tool that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs), which require a learning curve but are an attractive option that can even allow procedures to be performed under sedation. The objective of this review is to gather information from recent and updated articles, analyze and describe the options available for PNBs of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, and promote their usefulness.
