Aneurysmal Bone Cysts of the Spine: Two Case Reports

Abstract: Aneurysmal bone cysts are rare entities which causes expansile and destructive bone lesions characterized by reactive proliferation of connective tissue. They usually grow rapidly with hypervascularity. In clinical practice they can be easily misdiagnosed due to the rare occurance and having no such typical findings as radiologically. Most cases have uncommon pain symptoms, but rarely, if fractures occur, neurological findings can be seen and the surgical treatment, if needed, could be difficult. We will discu… Show more

“…Patients usually presents with back pain [4] however limb weakness and gait ataxia are not uncommon [5]. Treatment options of ABC is still controversial ranging from conservative management with analgesic, intra lesional steroid injection, calcitonin nasal spray to arterial embolisation , surgical curettage , resection and radiotherapy [6,7,8].…”

“…Paresthesia, paresis and abnormal gait are common neurological manifestations when the spine is involved. 6,7 However, we present a case of a female with non-specific back pain and no other significant neurological symptoms. She had no evidence of pathological fracture or progressive paraplegia which would raise the usual red flags for an underlying aggressive process.…”

“…Non-neoplastic ABCs are expansile bone lesions that possess connective tissue septa, which contain bone trabeculation and osteoclastic giant cells [ 7 ]. Roentgenographic and CT scans show an osteolytic lesion that causes the cortical bone around it to grow and shrink.…”
