Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia with Eosinophilia Associated to a Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Ear

Abstract: Damage to the vasculature of the ear by the malignant neoplasm or the release of angiogenic factors by the same neoplasm is a plausible explanation for the development and eventual resolution of the vascular proliferation.

“…Occasional co‐existence of ALHE with scabies infestation has also been reported . There is also an association of ALHE with SCC in which the removal of the tumor apparently induced regression of the ALHE, as well as a case of ALHE co‐existing with a basosquamous carcinoma . Additionally there are at least 2 cases in which the histopathologic pattern of ALHE mimicked an angiosarcoma, including an infiltration of the dermis by infiltrative blood vessels of varying sizes, lined by atypical endothelial cells …”

“…3 Microscopically, it is comprised of subcutaneous nodules with abnormal capillary vasculature growth near muscle arteries with increased reticulin formation and rare fibrosis 1,2,4,5,6 associated with an immature fibrovascular stroma with lymphocytic infiltrate, eosinophils with mastocytes, and mucinous deposits in the histologic sections. 3 Kempf mentioned this medical condition as a lymphoproliferative disorder of CD4T cells. 8 Endo et al, as well, described a high metabolic rate of the endothelial cells.…”

“…There has been a case report of ALHE associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). In that case, lesions of ALHE occurred on the anterior aspect of one ear with a SCC on the posterior aspect of the same ear simultaneously 3 . However, we could not find any report in which ALHE occurred in the exactly same site with squamous cell malignant lesion like in our case.…”
