Angiosarcoma of the Breast with Solitary Metastasis to the Ovary during Pregnancy: An Uncommon Pattern of Metastatic Disease

Abstract: Primary de novo angiosarcoma of the breast is an uncommon, aggressive neoplasm. Here, we present a case of a young woman who initially developed primary angiosarcoma of the breast, and subsequently angiosarcoma of the ovary during pregnancy two years later. Only two confirmed primary angiosarcomas of the breast metastasizing specifically to the ovary have been described in the literature. However, all previous cases had ovarian metastases at presentation or shortly after initial diagnosis. This case is unusual… Show more

“…Inherited conditions including neurofibromatosis Type 1 or Li-Fraumeni syndrome and exposure to environmental compounds such as arsenic and vinyl chloride have also been related; however, most of these neoplasms develop de novo in the breast 7 . Some conditions known to predispose angiosarcoma development in other sites are KTW-S and Maffucci syndromes 8 ; nevertheless, no cases have been reported in the literature showing association between the former syndrome and angiosarcomas in the breast. KTW-S is characterized by congenital vascular malformations with a normal number of endothelial cells, contrary to blood vessel tumors in which the number of endothelial cells is increased.…”
