Angle-of-arrival-based gesture recognition using ultrasonic multi-frequency signals

Abstract: Abstract-Hand gestures are tools for conveying information, expressing emotion, interacting with electronic devices or even serving disabled people as a second language. A gesture can be recognized by capturing the movement of the hand, in real time, and classifying the collected data. Several commercial products such as Microsoft Kinect, Leap Motion Sensor, Synertial Gloves and HTC Vive have been released and new solutions have been proposed by researchers to handle this task. These systems are mainly based o… Show more

“…The observed phase-difference can be calculated from the signals received at a pair of sensors S 1 and S 2 (see Fig. 1) as [5] The proposed grid search method is based on the notion that the set of observed (wrapped) phase difference values…”

“…The issue of phase wrapping can be resolved by exploiting the frequency diversity available in multi-frequency signals [17], [18], while in single-frequency scenarios, the focus of this paper, spatial diversity can be leveraged. Examples of spatial-diversity phase unwrapping methods include [14], [19], and the more recent 2q-order difference-set approach [20].…”

“…PDOA information is customarily used in far-field scenarios where anchor separations are small [15], [16]. For large The inter-anchor distance, the actual phase difference of a signal between a pair of anchors cannot be computed in a direct way.…”
