Animal Fats in Rabbit Feeding – A Review

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to overview the history of feeding rabbits with different types of animal fats, and to discuss their effects on rabbit performance and quality of their products. Other aspects of the inclusion of various animal fats in rabbit diets are also described. This article is based on the analysis of relevant scientific literature and presents animal fats fed to rabbits, such as beef tallow, butter, pork lard, poultry fat, fish oil, krill oil, oil extracted from insect larvae, mixtures of… Show more

“…The applicability of by-products from mammal, poultry, fish and invertebrate (in particular insect) processing for rabbit feeding was evaluated, with a special emphasis on sources of dietary protein and minerals. The role of animal fats in rabbit nutrition has been described in our previous review article (Gugołek and Kowalska, 2020).…”

“…In other studies, the efficiency of nitrogen retention has been improved by increasing fat addition [ 10 ] or increasing w-3 fatty acid content [ 11 ]. Moreover, fatter carcasses were also found when dietary fat content is increased [ 1 , 12 ].…”

“…There are a number of data in the literature that the use of various additives in rabbits' feeding has a positive effect on productivity, safety and reproductive function of animals (Talukder, 2013). However, not all authors agree, but on the contrary, they argue that not all supplements have a positive effect on productivity indicators (Smet et al, 2008;Gugołek & Kowalska, 2020). Analyzing the results of studies of both domestic and foreign scientists dealing with the introduction of optimal doses of macro-and micronutrients to improve the productivity of rabbits and digestibility of nutrients in the diet, we see that this problem has not been sufficiently studied yet, and the obtained results are contradictory.…”
