Animated Presentation of Static Infographics with InfoMotion

Abstract: By displaying visual elements logically in temporal order, animated infographics can help readers better understand layers of information expressed in an infographic. While many techniques and tools target the quick generation of static infographics, few support animation designs. We propose InfoMotion that automatically generates animated presentations of static infographics. We first conduct a survey to explore the design space of animated infographics. Based on this survey, InfoMotion extracts graphical pro… Show more

“…Data Animator also supports dividing complex animations into segments by layering keyframes, using data attributes to stagger the start time, and changing the speed of the animated objects through a timeline view. Similarly, InfoMotion [120] can generate data videos by extracting the graphical properties of an infographic, analyzing its underlying information structure, and then applying animation effects to the visual elements of the infographic in chronological order. InfoMotion [120] is integrated into PowerPoint [99] as an add-in, making it easier than Data Animator [119], which can only use data in Data Illustrator [147] format.…”

InfoMotion [120] is integrated into PowerPoint [99] as an add-in, making it easier than Data Animator [119], which can only use data in Data Illustrator [147] format. InfoMotion [120] can automatically attach various built-in animation effects to the visual elements of a slide show, which is useful for quickly creating data video.…”

“…Recently in infographic design, InfoVIF [24] analyzes the presentation flow of static infographics and extracts the visual groups using Gestalt principles of proximity and similarity. InfoMotion [37] extends InfoVIF to reconstruct visual groups using a clustering algorithm. However, these two recent techniques use carefully designed rules to pick elements into a visual group, which may ignore other design aspects.…”

“…A primary and direct use case is assisting graphic design: if the visual elements of an information presentation are grouped into a meaningful hierarchical structure, users can conveniently move/resize/rotate/transform/delete a group of related elements. It can also help to apply animation effects to the elements [37]. Furthermore, other potential use cases that rely on understanding the grouping structure include design assessment [43], visual search [14], information extraction [29], information seeking [13], and design space exploration [24].…”
