Abstract: Attractive interactions between molecules of like charges can be driven by the presence of areas of depleted electron density (σ and π-holes) on molecules, resulting in anion–anion self-assemblies that are ubiquitous, also found in biomolecules.

The emergence of nanotechnology has significantly promoted the development of the medical field, and the development of nanomedicines has broadened the application potential of existing drugs. However, at present, many new types of nanomedicines suffer from poor stability, uncertain safety, complex preparation processes, and high costs. The development of nano‐ Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) has provided new ideas for the application of nanomedicines. Nano‐CHMs are simple to prepare, easily accessible, and possess stable and reliable safety. This review highlighted nanoparticles with pharmacological activities are the important material basis for CHM formula decoctions. Given the complex composition of CHM formulas, the article further presented the nanoaggregates and exosome‐like vesicle nanostructures in single herbs, and self‐assembly effect of natural compounds. For the first time, this article systematically introduced the composition and characteristics of nanoparticles from CHM formulas to single herbs and then to natural compounds, from nano‐aggregates with unclear components to exosome‐like vesicle structures and then to self‐assembled structures of supramolecular materials. It also summarized the problems to be solved in the research of CHMs nanoparticles and the potential for further applications, aiming to provide guidance for the modernization of CHMs ‐related nanoparticles.

The ‐N+(CH3)3 residue is present in acetylcholine (ACh) and in many of its analogues which are used as selective ACh agonist or antagonists for human therapy. The X‐ray structures of four ACh derivatives show the presence of short and linear contacts between the C atoms of ‐N+(CH3)3 groups and lone pair possessing atoms. These contacts can be rationalized as tetrel bonds (TtBs) thanks to their geometric features. Interrogation of the Protein Data Bank suggests that similar ‐N+‒C···nucleophile contacts affect the details of the binding of ACh and its derivatives to proteins. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules, noncovalent interaction plot, and natural bond orbital analyses consistently confirm that the ‐N+‒C···nucleophile contacts observed in small molecule crystals and in substrate/protein complexes are attractive in nature and can be rationalized as TtBs. TtBs involving methyl groups of the –N+(CH3)3 moiety can be proposed as a new item in the palette of interactions allowing the compounds containing this pharmacophoric unit to bind to their target protein and/or to express their biological/pharmacological properties.

This manuscript shows that Si-H hydrogen acts as a donor of electron density to halogen atoms in Me 3 Si-H•••Y complexes (Y = CF 3 I, BrCN), thus proving that, consistent with IUPAC definitions of hydrogen and halogen bonds, hydridic hydrogen functions as a halogen bond acceptor. This has been necessitated by a paper recently published asking whether the definition of hydrogen bonding should be revised to include hydridic H atoms acting as electron donors. We discuss the various nomenclatures used for referring to intermolecular/noncovalent bonds formed by various elements and point out the convention established in naming them by IUPAC, after long deliberations among the chemists from all over the world.
