Anion-conducting sulfaminated aromatic polymers by acid functionalization

Abstract: A simple synthesis technique for the preparation of anionic conducting membranes is presented. In the first step, poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) reacts with chlorosulfonic acid to produce chlorosulfonated PEEK, which in a second step is transformed by reaction with a secondary amine, dimethyl- or diethylamine, into sulfaminated PEEK. The sulfaminated PEEK is cast and the membranes are functionalized in a last step by reaction with various aqueous acid solutions, including HCl, HBr, HNO3, H2SO4, and H3PO4. The … Show more

“…The protonation of the sulfonamide group leads to a sulfammonium group, which is stable also in absence of excess acid, as shown previously 33 . Furthermore, a small degree of cross-linking (DXL = 0.1) is introduced by the sulfonation procedure with chlorosulfonic acid 33 , as shown by the NMR spectrum ( Figure 7).…”

“…Furthermore, a small degree of cross-linking (DXL = 0.1) is introduced by the sulfonation procedure with chlorosulfonic acid 33 , as shown by the NMR spectrum ( Figure 7). Evidently, this structure leads to a very efficient reduction of cation permeation by the Donnan exclusion and the permeability values are very low (Table 1).…”

“…A classical synthetic route involves chloromethylation, followed by substitution with tertiary amines . Another possibility is the grafting of sulfonamide groups followed by reaction with mineral acids …”

“…The synthesis strategy was to functionalize the polymer with a moiety that can, in a second step, be transformed into acidic (sulfonic acid) as well as into basic (sulfonamide) groups. The intermediate chosen for this purpose was a chlorosulfonated moiety . The acid–base dependence of mobile ions is represented in Figure , which shows PEEK containing both sulfonic acid and sulfonamide groups (hereafter referred to as “SAM‐PEEK”).…”
