Anion-Exchange Cottons Prepared from Sodium Cellulosate1

Abstract: Sodium cellulosates containing from 0.5-1.9 mequivs of Na+ per gram of fabric were prepared by reacting cotton in methanolic solutions of sodium methoxide. The sodium cellulosates were reacted with β-chloroethyldiethylamine in t-butanol to form diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cottons of greater than 1.0% nitrogen. These DEAE -cottons, easily pre pared at room temperature, were readily converted to the quaternary-base cellulose anion exchangers. Quaternary-base anion exchangers of lower capacity were prepared by react… Show more

“…Diethylaminoethylated (DEAE) cotton was prepared in the absence of water by reacting cotton with sodium methoxide in methanol to form the sodium salt of cellulose. This was then reacted with 2-chloroethyldiethylamine in tertiary butanol (5,6). The product was washed in methanol and air-dried.…”

“…Diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cottons have been prepared in aqueous (1)(2)(3)(4) and nonaqueous (5,6) media. These modified celluloses have been used as anion exchangers (7,8), and as substrates (9)(10)(11) for further chemical reactions that are catalyzed by the in situ amino groups.…”

“…Cotton with primary amine characteristics is called aminized cotton and cotton with tertiary amine characteristics is called diethvlaminoethyl cotton or I)EAE-cotton. DEAE-cotton was prepared from sodium cellulosate [1,11] by a completely nonaqueous procedure and stored in 1-butanol for subsequent use. Carboxymcthylcdlulose was also prepared [10~.…”
