Annotations in Digital Libraries and Collaboratories – Facets, Models and Usage

Abstract: This paper presents the results of our study regarding the different facets and ways of using annotations in both digital libraries and collaboratories. This study represents an innovative attempt at gathering methodological tools and synergies from both fields in order to effectively define a comprehensive model for annotations. Thus we propose a conceptual model for annotations in order to develop an annotation service that can be plugged into digital libraries and collaboratories. Finally, starting from our… Show more

“…The example also shows another important feature of the annotations: they can take a part of a hypertext, as observed by [9,19,23], since they enable the creation of new relationships among existing digital objects, by means of links that connect annotations together with existing digital objects. The hypertext between annotations and annotated objects can be exploited for providing alternative navigation and browsing capabilities.…”

“…Researchers have worked on annotation frameworks from a number of perspectives. Linguistically oriented frameworks are Bird and Liberman's work on annotation graphs (2001) Agosti et al (2004). Microsoft researchers developed a Common Annotation Framework directed towards collaborative functionality in office applications Bargeron et al (2001).…”

“…According to the considerations in [11], annotations can be discussed from different viewpoints. From a syntactic point of view, annotations are metadata, since they are connected to the objects they annotate.…”

“…Their approach gained better results than classic relevance feedback, as experiments showed. Agosti et al [11] discuss facets of annotations and propose an annotation-based retrieval function based on probabilistic inference. Frommholz et al [29] present a nested annotation retrieval approach based on probabilistic logics.…”
