Annual Cost of Illness and Quality-Adjusted Life Year Losses in the United States Due to 14 Foodborne Pathogens

Abstract: In this article we estimate the annual cost of illness and quality-adjusted life year (QALY) loss in the United States caused by 14 of the 31 major foodborne pathogens reported on by Scallan et al. (Emerg. Infect. Dis. 17:7-15, 2011), based on their incidence estimates of foodborne illness in the United States. These 14 pathogens account for 95 % of illnesses and hospitalizations and 98 % of deaths due to identifiable pathogens estimated by Scallan et al. We estimate that these 14 pathogens cause $14.0 billio… Show more

“…T. gondii is an apicomplexan protozoan that infects one-third of world's population through contaminated food, can cause cerebral toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised individuals, and has no approved human vaccine despite efforts to generate immunity through injection of live-attenuated parasites, DNA, and peptides (73). The annual cost of this illness in the United States is estimated to be $3 billion (74). After confirming the ability to express multiple replicons simultaneously coformulated into a single MDNP (Fig.…”

“…Foodborne pathogens in the United States, cause losses in several billions of dollars (Hoffmann et al, 2012). Since the therapeutic antibiotics are restricted in foods, the utilization of antimicrobial peptides from lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that target food pathogens without toxic or other adverse effects has received important attention.…”

“…Adv., 10 (11): 708-723, 2015 Pre-harvest control in food producing livestock and poultry (Crim et al, 2014). Regarding financial burden posed by foodborne pathogens, it has been estimated that the cost of illnesses caused by 14 major foodborne pathogens is $14 billion per year in USA alone, 90% of which is caused by the five most common causes of foodborne diseases (Hoffmann et al, 2012). Out of these, Salmonella enterica is the most common ($3.3 billion), followed by Campylobacter spp.…”
