Annual Research Review: The state of implementation science in child psychology and psychiatry: a review and suggestions to advance the field

Abstract: Optimizing the implementation of effective treatments in community care for youth with psychiatric disorders is a defining challenge of our time. This review proposes a new direction focused on developing and testing integrated causal theories. We recommend implementation scientists: (a) move from observational studies of implementation barriers and facilitators to trials that include causal theory; (b) identify a core set of implementation determinants; (c) conduct trials of implementation strategies with cle… Show more

“…The gap between research and practice is well‐documented in psychology, medicine, and special education (Balas & Boren, ; Greenwood & Abbott, ; Williams & Beidas, ). “…Implementation science has developed multiple useful frameworks, identi ed outcomes of interest, and established the importance of understanding the contexts of clinician and organizational behavior. All of these contributions have signi cantly advanced our understanding of how to improve quality of care and population health (4). As the eld matures, the next set of research questions must focus on how to develop effective implementation strategies with a clear understanding of why and how they work (5).…”

“…Nevertheless, the information search is not enough to assess the available evidence. In this respect, the lack of skills to assess scientific evidence has been reported as a barrier for the EBP (Williams & Beidas, 2019). The ability to identify, to assess and distinguishing between reliable sources from those who are not, is linked to better results in the implementation process (IIlic, 2009).…”
