Anomalies in the Geometric Surface Structure of Shaped Elements Composed of Inconel 718 Alloy

Abstract: This paper presents the results of investigation that was performed on shafts composed of Inconel 718. Tests were performed in dry and wet conditions. Cutting parameters, such as feed and depth of cut, were constant. The cutting speed was changed. The investigation was performed for various shaft shapes: cylindrical, taper 30°, taper 45°, and sphere. For that reason, the value of the angle between the machined surface and the cutting edge changed. The lowest values of the roughness parameters, Ra and Rz, were … Show more

“…Improving the quality of manufactured components reduces the number of corrections and scrap parts [16]. Manufacturing processes for difficult-to-machine materials are extremely time-consuming, and the characteristics of these materials lead to rapid tool wear [33]. For instance, the process of machining an aircraft engine shaft made of Inconel 718 alloy takes approximately 20 h on a CNC machine, equivalent to an electricity consumption of about 300 kWh.…”

“…Inconel 718 is a high-strength material and it belongs to the group of heat resistant alloys based on nickel [ 1 ]. Due to its mechanical and physical properties, such as high strength and creep resistance at high temperatures, it is widely applied in the aircraft industry for manufacturing parts working in the hot section of turbine engines [ 2 ]. Since Inconel 718 also shows low thermal conductivity [ 3 , 4 ] and the ability to be strain hardened, it is considered to be a hard-to-machine material.…”

“…The experimental tests proved that, when milling with constant cut layer thickness, the high feed cutter allowed to obtain twice the cutting volume in comparison with the conventional face cutter. Krawczyk et al [35] performed tests concerning turning on shafts made of Inconel 718. The tests were performed in dry and wet conditions, with changing cutting speed and constant feed and depth of cut.…”
