Anomalous Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations in rare-earth tritelluride NdTe3

Abstract: Materials with the structural motif of a square net have in recent years attracted attention for their often unexpected electronic properties. Here, we present low-temperature magnetotransport experiments on high-quality NdTe 3 single crystals with a carrier mobility of 6 × 10 4 cm 2 /V s at 2.25 K; an increase of 58% is observed below the Néel temperature. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations up to 9 T exhibit anomalies in their amplitude which deviates from the conventional Lifshitz-Kosevich behavior below the mag… Show more

“…To verify whether the one-step PEET method can be applied to electrical measurements on air-sensitive ultrathin crystals, a rareearth telluride, SmTe 2 , was selected as the model air-sensitive 2D material. To our best knowledge, rare-earth tellurides are a group of layered materials with intriguing physical properties, such as quantum oscillations, [24,29] charge density waves, [30,31] and antiferromagnetic order. [24,32] However, previous works are mainly focused on their bulk system.…”

“…These structures do not feature fully localized 2c-2e bonds, thus, despite the CDW, the hypervalency remains to some degree. Notably, two of these compounds, GdTe 3 and NdTe 3 , have very high electronic mobility, a common feature of TSMs [86,87]. In fact, GdTe 3 was shown to be the first magnetic high mobility material that can also be exfoliated [86].…”

“…Almost all of them show either insulating or semiconducting behavior. [21,22] A few exceptions are metallic ferromagnets Fe 3 GeTe 2 , [23] Fe 4 GeTe 2 [24] and antiferromagnets LnTe 3 (Ln=lanthanides), [25][26][27][28][29] TaCo 2 Te 2 . [30] Among these materials, LnTe 3 [27][28][29] and TaCo 2 Te 2 [30] are particularly interesting as they also demonstrate high-mobility charge carriers, a requisite for low-power, ultrafast electronic applications.…”
