Anophthalmic socket- A cosmetic dilemma

Abstract: Anophthalmos is the absence of the globe and ocular tissues from the orbit. It can be congenital or acquired which is produced by destructive procedures like enucleation and evisceration. It affects the cosmetic appearance of the patient and can be particularly devastating psychologically. The anophthalmic socket has been associated with many complications such as discharge, entropion, ectropion, exposure or extrusion of the orbital implant, infection, migration of the orbital implant, contracted socket and pt… Show more

“…Also, delay in use of prosthesis and multiple excision of pyogenic granuloma have been described as a cause of contracted socket. 10,11 We have evaluated all causes of contracted socket , and anophthalmia secondary to enucleation/evisceration was found to be the most common cause in our study (33.3%).…”

“…Most patients have undergone one or several previous surgeries elsewhere, which complicated the current reconstruction and required the use of different surgical techniques. Anophthalmic orbit is a result of eyeball loss, after enucleation or evisceration (4). When this occurs in childhood or adolescence, as in the case described by us, the use of an orbital implant is indispensable to provide an adequate stimulus for the growth of bone structures of the orbit and to achieve facial symmetry.…”

“…Anophthalmia is the absence of the eyeball and its surrounding tissue from the orbital cavity. 1, 2 The majority of cases are caused by destructive eye surgery, such as evisceration. 2 Inadequate wound healing (following evisceration) might result in conjunctival and subconjunctival scarring that leads to socket contractures.…”

“…1, 2 The majority of cases are caused by destructive eye surgery, such as evisceration. 2 Inadequate wound healing (following evisceration) might result in conjunctival and subconjunctival scarring that leads to socket contractures. 3 Contracted socket is still a major problem for anophthalmic patients because the prosthetic eye cannot be properly attached, resulting in cosmetic eyelid issues such as entropion, ectropion, infection, and ptosis.…”
