Ant-Associated Beetle Fauna in Bulgaria: A Review and New Data

Abstract: The rich myrmecofauna in Bulgaria, comprising about 170 species, constitutes favorable settings for a diverse associated fauna. An attempt to summarize the fragmented faunal data on this ecological group in Bulgaria, together with inclusion of new data, has resulted in a comprehensive list of 121 beetle species from 14 families, obligate or facultative ant related. The extent of current knowledge on the various beetle families, host specificity, the nature of relations between guests and their ant hosts, and t… Show more

“…A list of haeteriine host ant genera was obtained from the literature (Helava et al, 1985; Yélamos, 1997; Tishechkin, 2007; Lapeva-Gjonova, 2013; Mazur, 1981). To estimate ages of stem-group and Recent host ant taxa in Figure 3a, data for earliest-known fossils were obtained from Barden (2016) (Barden, 2016; Barden, 2018), and molecular age estimates of crown-groups were taken from recent taxon-specific phylogenetic studies (Borowiec et al, 2017a; Borowiec et al, 2017b; Blaimer et al, 2015; Ward et al, 2015; Ferguson-Gow et al, 2014; Ward et al, 2010; Schmidt, 2013).…”

“…Some species have zoosaprophagous and phytosaprophagous larvae (Schöller 1998). The myrmecophilous larvae appear to feed on ant droppings and pellets (Erber 1988; Lapeva-Gjonova 2013); others feed on detritus (LeSage 1985, 1986; Erber 1988, Stiefel 1993), leaf litter or dead insects collected by the ants (Schöller 1998); or, on ants or ant bodies (Riley 1882). Schöller (1995) posits that zoosaprophagy may be an important aid for the development of larvae inhabiting arid and semi-arid regions, when plant foliage is scarce.…”

“…Apesar da diversidade e ampla variedade de locais de nidifi cação das poneromorfas, há pouca informação sobre a fauna associada a seus ninhos, com exceção de alguns registros isolados de ácaros, insetos e moluscos associados a Neoponera (MEN- DONÇA-LOPES et al, 2011, 2013SANTOS et al, 2012) e a presença de colêmbolos em ninhos de Leptogenys distinguenda (Emery) (WITTE et al, 1999).…”
