Antagonistic Potential of Fluorescent Pseudomonads Colonizing Wheat Heads Against Mycotoxin Producing Alternaria and Fusaria

Abstract: Natural control of phytopathogenic microorganisms is assumed as a priority function of the commensal plant microbiota. In this study, the suitability of fluorescent pseudomonads in the phyllosphere of crop plants as natural control agents was evaluated. Under field conditions, ears of winter wheat were found to be colonized with high consistency and at a high density by pseudomonads at the late milk dough stage. Isolates of these bacteria were evaluated for their potential to protect the plants from phytopatho… Show more

“…Both fungi were selected because of their proven high pathogenic activity and mycotoxin production in laboratory tests [ 12 , 32 ]. The Ps 9 hosts the gene prnCto that synthesize the antibiotic pyrrolnitrin and showed in in vitro tests antagonistic potential against alternaria and fusaria, with the ability to reduce the mycotoxin production [ 40 , 46 ]. Fungi are stored at −20 C as single-spore cultures on sterile wheat kernels.…”

“…The inoculum preparation of P. simiae 9 is described in detail by Müller et al [ 40 ]. The suspension density was determined using a Thoma counting chamber of 0.01 mm depth (Poly-Optik GmbH, Bad Blankenburg, Germany) and adjusted to cells mL by using sterile 1/4 strength Ringer’s solution.…”

“…Phytopathogenic microorganisms, including mold fungi, constitute a special group of microflora of plant materials [10]. They infect plants even when developing in the field and can produce toxic substances that are diverse in chemical nature -mycotoxins.…”
