Antagonistic Properties of Some Halophilic Thermoactinomycetes Isolated from Superficial Sediment of a Solar Saltern and Production of Cyclic Antimicrobial Peptides by the Novel Isolate Paludifilum halophilum

Abstract: This study has focused on the isolation of twenty-three halophilic actinomycetes from two ponds of different salinity and the evaluation of their ability to exert an antimicrobial activity against both their competitors and several other pathogens. From the 23 isolates, 18 strains showed antagonistic activity, while 19 showed activities against one or more of the seven pathogen strains tested. Six strains exhibited consistent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens characterize… Show more

“…Our results indicate that the number of keystone taxa affected by, or affecting other members in the microbial mat community within site B is equivalent, being the majority members of both RB and microbial mat core. An interesting example within these hubs is the family Thermoactinomycetaceae, which is known for its protein degradative capacities, strong lipolytic activity, and alpha-amylase activity, as well as antimicrobial activity ( Frikha Dammak et al, 2017 ).…”

“…In the present study, we targeted the isolation of actinomycetes because it produces about 70-80 % of the available natural antibiotics in the world. The chance is the discovery of strains of rare actinomycetes producing novel antimicrobial compounds [76].…”

“…Actinobacteria are widely present in the rhizosphere of plants and produce various agro-active compounds. In the recent years, this group of bacteria, based on its high antimicrobial potential and its dominant saprophytic nature in the soil, has attracted much attention [ 15 ]. Actinobacteria promote plant growth by producing phytohormones (Indole Acetic Acid; IAA), siderophores and solubilizing phosphate.…”
