Antennas on metamaterial substrates as emitting components for THz biomedical imaging

Abstract: Terahertz technology is considered a viable option for medical imaging, since many biological and chemical agents exhibit signatures in this spectral domain. Ultimately, large biomolecules and protein strands will be accessible, enabled by the coupling of THz science with near-field probes. In this paper, we present the recent advances of our research regarding a novel 2-D THz imaging system that it is intended to be used for imaging and characterization of tissue and biomolecule samples associated to brain fu… Show more

“…Not similar to that obtained in work [9], where experimental measurements did verification. While at work [7]- [9], and [10], [11], the simulation results were neither validated nor compared. At this work, like work [9], the wanted THz antenna design was done with the CST MWS software, while at works [7], [8] and [10], the modeling and simulating of the wanted THz antenna were made with an Ansys HFSS software.…”

“…According to [7], the authors modeled, optimized, and simulated with an Ansys high-frequency structure solver (HFSS), duo 1 THz antennas, with metamaterials for increasing the antenna's gain. The first was a microstrip antenna, and the second was a bow-tie patch antenna.…”

“…In [13], the SRR labyrinth geometry obtained an increase in BW by 600%, better voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) by 1.5% and a miniaturized antenna by 400%. And an antenna for THz [20], obtained a high gain using a rectangular MTR type SRR.…”

“…The research field of chiral photonics is an area of growing interest, with potential to contribute to applications ranging from negative-and near-zero refractive index metamaterials [1,2], to chiral bioimaging [3,4], to all-optical switching [5][6][7][8]. Realization of such applications, and the full potential of this field, demands materials with dramatically greater optical chirality than that observed in naturally occurring materials [9][10][11].…”
