Anterior ankle arthrodesis

Abstract: Ankle arthrodesis is a common procedure that resolves many conditions of the foot and ankle; however, complications following this procedure are often reported and vary depending on the fixation technique. Various techniques have been described in the attempt to achieve ankle arthrodesis and there is much debate as to the efficiency of each one. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of anterior plating in ankle arthrodesis using customised and Synthes TomoFix plates. We present the outcomes of 28 ankle ar… Show more

“…The bone marrow and mesenchymal stem cell will fill the gap to facilitate early bony union [28, 29]. It is the similar principle when the surgeons use a 1- or 2-mm Kirschner wire to drill into the subchondral bone to prepare the joint for open arthrodesis [30]. The advantages of this technique include avoiding excessive bone loss at the arthrodesis site, decreasing the limb-length discrepancy, and maintaining the surface profile.…”

“…A number of various techniques were proposed to achieve ankle arthrodesis, among them external and internal stabilization [ 14 16 , 18 , 20 , 22 , 23 , 25 , 26 ]. Outcomes of ankle arthrodesis vary depending on the stabilization technique [ 14 , 22 , 24 , 26 30 ].…”
