The approach was further developed for a combined tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy operation (Myers and Schlosser 1960;Corgill and Martinez 1963;Jansen 1963) to help ensure removal of disease in the posterior recesses of the middle ear while retaining the posterior canal wall intact.
