Anterior segment imaging: ultrasound biomicroscopy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography

Abstract: Rapid advances in anterior segment imaging are enlightening clinicians and researchers to the importance in making the diagnosis of primary angle closure, trying to establish underlying causal mechanisms, and evaluating treatments. Although they do not replace conventional angle and anterior segment examination, they hold great potential for the future.

“…Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) can give images of highresolution and good quality for anterior segment including iridocorneal angle and ciliary body which are not visible with ordinary gonioscopy [14,16,18]. The major disadvantage of the UBM technique is that the transducer requires immersion of the eye in a water bath of saline with the patient in the supine position.…”

“…It is a rapid technique and provides quantitative analysis of different ocular structures. It also has repeatability and reproducibility because of its low intraobserver and interobserver variability [14][15][16][17].…”

“…These include slit scanning topography, Scheimpflug imaging, ultrasound biomicroscopy [22][23][24][25][26]. OCT imaging of anterior segment of eye has earned considerable attention since the first demonstration in 1994 [27], and most of the available commercial devices dedicated strictly to anterior segment imaging are limited to Time-domain OCT method, which is relatively slow [28][29][30].…”

“…Несмотря на то что для оценки радужно-рого-вичного угла разработаны разные методы диагно-стики: ультразвуковая биомикроскопия (УБМ), оптическая когерентная томография переднего отрезка глазного яблока (ОКТ-ПОГ) [13,21,29], мы с успехом использовали более доступную го-ниоскопию [5,7].…”
