Anthropometric changes in adolescents with anorexia nervosa in response to resistance training

Abstract: Anthropometric measurements could be useful for assessing muscle status in AN-R patients during the treatment process. However, exact standard deviation scores should be used instead of percentile categories to increase the sensitivity to changes in TSF, MTSF, MUAC, MTC or AMA.

“…Practice guidelines suggest that 'for severely underweight patient, exercise should be restricted and always carefully supervised and monitored' [9]; however, these authors state that further research is needed [36]. Rapid weight restoration is essential [4e9]; however, too quick weight gain at the beginning of treatment is considered to be unfavorable for later weight maintenance and long-term recovery [7,13,20]. Fast weight gain is often associated with abdominal fat accumulation [3,27,28,31], which can have negative metabolic effects [27].…”

“…Most commonly, body mass index (BMI) and the speed of weight gain are used for assessing nutritional status and therapy progress [20,24,25]. Thus, the patient's body composition remains unconsidered, which is a substantial health criterion.…”

“…Among the 28 selected reports, we found seven reports corresponding to three studies (i.e., same sample, same trial number, same authors, same hospital): the two reports of Szabo & Green ( 49 ) and Chantler et al ( 50 ) were from the same study; the three reports of Fernandez-del-Valle et al ( 51 ), Fernandez-del-Valle et al ( 52 ) and Fernandez-del-Valle et al ( 53 ) were from the same study; and the two reports of Martinez-Sanchez et al ( 54 ) & Martinez-Sanchez et al ( 55 ) were from the same study.…”

“…These studies were conducted between 2002 and 2017. The resistance exercise programs were carried out two (Szabo and Green, ( 49 ); Chantler et al, ( 50 ); Fernandez-del-Valle et al, ( 56 )), three (Fernandez-del-Valle et al, ( 51 ); ( 52 ); ( 53 )) or fourteen times per week (Martin et al, ( 57 )), with a session duration of 60 minutes, except for Martin et al’s program ( 57 ) which included 5-minute sessions. Only one report did not mention the duration of sessions (Szabo and Green, ( 49 )).…”

“…anthropometric measurements could be useful for assessing muscle status in those patients. 87 repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques were also tested for potential applications in the field of ED, with non-conclusive evidence so far. 88 it is well-established that the persistence of body dissatisfaction at the end of treatment is a reliable predictor of relapse in both an and Bn: two studies addressed this issue augmenting cBt one with a virtual reality-based intervention 89 and the second with a manualized group treatment.…”
