Anti-adhesion and Anti-inflammatory Potential of the Leaderless Class IIb Bacteriocin Enterocin DD14

Abstract: In this study, we investigate the interactions between the leaderless class IIb bacteriocin, enterocin DD14 (EntDD14), or the methicillin or the combination of these antibacterials, and two methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains (MRSA-S1 and USA 300) which are respectively a clinical strain and a reference strain. The results obtained showed that EntDD14 alone or in combination with the antibiotic could significantly prevent the adhesion of these pathogenic bacteria to human… Show more

“…This bacteriocin has been characterized as a potent chemical inhibitor of the The enterocin DD14 (Ent DD14), which is produced by Enterococcus faecalis 14 strain isolated from newborn's meconium, exerts the anti-inflammatory effect on the secretion of pro-inflammatory interleukins, including IL-6 and IL-8. The results show that EntDD14 is able to significantly decrease the secretion of both interleukins on Caco-2 cells following their treatments with LPS [117].…”

“…It is of note that treatment of C. perfringens with such nanobiotics (bacteriocins loaded on alginate nanoparticles) has annihilated the expression of genes encoding some virulence factors [76]. Recently, a study carried out in our laboratory has established an anti-adhesive action of EntDD14 against several MRSA strains, noticeably across S. aureus USA300, which is known for its virulence traits and ability to colonize different surfaces [87]. In this study, we also unveiled the potential of EntDD14 to decrease the secretion of pro-inflammatory interleukins, IL-6 and IL-8, on human intestinal Caco-2 cells previously inflamed with bacterial lipopolysaccharide [87].…”

Generally active only against closely phylogenetically related microorganism, some LAB-bacteriocins, however, are exceptionally active against Gram-negative bacilli [88,89].…”
