Anti-Candida Activity of Bursera morelensis Ramirez Essential Oil and Two Compounds, α-Pinene and γ-Terpinene—An In Vitro Study

Abstract: The candidiasis caused by C. albicans is a public health problem. The abuse of antifungals has contributed to the development of resistance. B. morelensis has demonstrated antibacterial and antifungal activities. In this work the activity of the essential oil of B. morelensis was evaluated and for its two pure compounds with analysis of the different mechanisms of pathogenesis important for C. albicans. The essential oil was obtained by the hydro-distillation method and analyzed using GC–MS. The anti-Candida a… Show more

“…Our results showed that both EO treatments had the better structure of scar tissue and a greater deposit of collagen. The antibacterial and antifungal activity of the EO of B. morelensis might be partly responsible for the results shown here because due to its lipophilic characteristics, the EO permeates the plasma membranes of both bacteria and fungi, generating ionic imbalances in membrane potential and even mitochondrial respiration, causing cellular collapse [9]. In our working group, it has been shown that the B. morelensis' EO alters the expression of the gene that codifies the integrin INT1p.…”

“…In our working group, it has been shown that the B. morelensis' EO alters the expression of the gene that codifies the integrin INT1p. This is very important since the integrins are known to be key in the adhesion of Candida albican; furthermore, EO inhibits the growth of the germ tube and causes the loss of the integrity of the cell membrane of this yeast [10].…”

“…Rich in these substances are, among others Origanum and Thymus plants. Important antifungal chemicals often presented in Lamiaceae are also other monoterpenes as alcohol linalool and cyclic 1,8-cineole, limonene, pinenes, and terpinenes [138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145][146]. Table 1 shows that all of these antifungal substances are common in presented plants.…”

“…The alteration of cell permeability caused by the insertion of small molecules of monoterpenes between the fatty acid chains of membrane phospholipids seems to be a common effect [ 123 , 124 ]. A high inhibitory activity was related to the presence of an aromatic ring in the monoterpene molecule [ 125 ], and thymol and carvacrol have been the subject of several investigations aimed at unravelling their mechanism of action. This involves the inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, with disruption of membrane integrity [ 126 ].…”
