Anti-Depressant Properties of Crocin Molecules in Saffron

Abstract: Saffron is a valued herb, obtained from the stigmas of the C. sativus Linn (Iridaceae), with therapeutic effects. It has been described in pharmacopoeias to be variously acting, including as an anti-depressant, anti-carcinogen, and stimulant agent. The therapeutic effects of saffron are harbored in its bioactive molecules, notably crocins, the subject of this paper. Crocins have been demonstrated to act as a monoamine oxidase type A and B inhibitor. Furthermore, saffron petal extracts have experimentally been … Show more

“…The safety of saffron and its metabolites have been evaluated in clinical trials of both adult and pediatric patients, administered mainly p.o. , in different dosages or formulations (14–450 mg of saffron, 5–30 mg of CRCs, or 7.5–37.5 mg of CRT) [ 143 , 144 , 145 ]. Administration of Crocus sativus L. stigma tablets (200 and 400 mg/day, for 7 days) in healthy adult volunteers, was safe, without significantly affecting any hematological, biochemical and coagulation parameters [ 146 , 147 , 148 ].…”

“…The main coloring and biologically active components of saffron are the water-soluble carotenoids crocin and crocetin. The high biological activity of crocin and the prospect of using it for the treatment of eye diseases (glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration) [61], as an antidepressant [62], and an anticancer substance [63] have been revealed.…”

“…Gluten sensitivity without celiac disease is another exciting concept. Some patients with irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia who do not have signs of gluten disease experience a significant improvement in symptoms after excluding gluten from their diet [15,16]. Basic principles of treatment of functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract in anxiety disorders are showed in Table 1.…”
