Anti-endothelial cell antibodies in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

Abstract: SUMMARYThe prevalence of IgG class antibodies to endothelial cells (AECA) was studied in 136 young patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus by an enzyme immunoassay using human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells. The patients were divided into four groups according to the time between diagnosis and study and their results were compared with those in control children and blood donors. AECA became progressively more frequent with the duration of diabetes, being 4% in diabetics tested within 2 weeks o… Show more

“…Endothelial cell binding autoantibodies were reported in type 1 diabetes mellitus in association with proliferative retinopathy [17]. Additional studies, however, failed to confirm an association between EC binding autoantibodies and either retinopathy or microvascular disease complications [18,19]. Our data are the first to suggest that immunoglobulin G autoantibodies in plasma from adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus inhibit ECs.…”

“…At the end of the AECA assay incubation periods the cells were fixed with glutaraldehyde as AECA were sought by a cellular enzyme immunoassay [17], already described and tested so that both the sham-incubated similar to that described by Rosenbaum et al [18]. Briefly, and the cytokine-incubated cultures were run in the same assay.…”

“…Its multi-dimensional and multi-levelled concept provides a 'structural affinity' to sustainability topics as it can handle transdisciplinary approaches as well (Robinson, 2011;Wangel, 2011). In summary, this normative approach can cover a wide scope and time-horizon and create alternative visions of the future that can facilitate thinking that moves beyond current paradigms.…”

“…Based on the previously identified elements and the experiences of previous backcasting experiments, Quist and Vergragt (2006) It is clear from the previously described nature of backcasting that it is a method well suited to accommodate comprehensive research on sustainable development issues due to its ability to handle complexity in cases where current trends are part of the problem (Wangel, 2011). Its multi-dimensional and multi-levelled concept provides a 'structural affinity' to sustainability topics as it can handle transdisciplinary approaches as well (Robinson, 2011;Wangel, 2011).…”
