Anti-GM1 antibodies in patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Abstract: Anti-GM1 antibodies were measured in 22 patients with the Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) and compared with anti-GM1 antibody activity in patients with other neurological or immunological diseases and in normal subjects. Four out of 22 patients with GBS had raised IgM, IgG, or IgA anti-GM, antibody activities. All four patients were tetraparetic with only minimal or no sensory deficit. Three ofthe patients had highly raised antibody activity and showed severe residual deficits, while of the remaining patients wi… Show more

China risk factors for GBS are respiratory and gas trointestinal tract infections or other diverse antecedents which occurred in about two thirds of GBS cases over the time period of approximately 1 month before onset [3][4][5][6][7].The reported incidence rates of GBS in the general population usually range from 1 to 2 per 100,000, are higher in males and increase with age. Therefore, GBS is rarely expected in a pregnant woman.…”

“…Along with an association with c. jejuni infection, other poor prognostic factors include need for ventillatory support and confinement to a bed within 2 days of neuropathic symptom onset (rapid progression) (Rees, 1995). Also, patients with anti-GM1 antibodies can be associated with poorer prognosis (Van der berg, 1991). Overall, prognosis is excellent with >80% of patients recovering the ability to ambulate (Simmons 2010).…”

“…All patients had neuropathy documented clinically and by electromyography (EMG)/nerve conduction studies. The patients were all evaluated for anti-MAG antibodies using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as described previously 17,18 and were considered anti-MAG antibody positive with titers ജ1:3200.Tremor Analysis Technique.
