Anti-Heartburn Effects of Sugar Cane Flour: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study

Abstract: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects approximately 20% of Australians. Patients suffer a burning sensation known as heartburn due to the movement of acidic stomach content into the esophagus. There is anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness of prebiotic sugarcane flour in controlling symptoms of GERD. This pilot study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a prebiotic sugarcane flour in alleviating symptoms in medically-diagnosed GERD patients. This pilot study was a single center, double-blinded,… Show more

“…A prospective study comparing a liberal diet and a restrictive diet showed that, after instructions on a restrictive diet and reading literature about good and bad food and the provision of a list of good menus for 2 days, subjects showed a significant reduction of AET measured by 48 h pH monitoring among participants with abnormal AET. No symptom change, however, was found after 2 days of dietary adjustment [28].…”

“…The postulated mechanism for this advantage is the decelerated fermentation, resulting in enhanced luminal accessibility in contrast to conventional fiber-laden products. The preliminary investigation demonstrated notable beneficial impacts of sugarcane flour on alleviating GERD symptoms, necessitating a more expansive randomized controlled trial ( 64 ).Probiotics introduce bacterial strains via dietary supplementation, aiming to optimize the gut microbiota composition towards a more favorable equilibrium. Evaluations of probiotics encompassing Lactobacilli spp.…”

“…71, 72 Several probiotic supplements have demonstrated modest efficacy in reducing heartburn symptoms. 66,67, 73 An interesting study, still in progress, hypothesized that long-term PPI use and its effect on microbiome disturbances could affect concomitant probiotic use. 74 In this randomized, double-blind, placebo control trial, Liu et al plan to enroll 120 eligible patients with GERD and place them either in a PPI (rabeprazole) plus probiotic (LiHuo probiotic) arm or a PPI alone arm.…”
