Anti-inflammatory activities of garlic sprouts, a source of α-linolenic acid and 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan, in RAW 264.7 cells

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the indolic, phenolic, and fatty acid content and antioxidant activity of garlic sprouts growing in the dark and in the daylight. The pro- or anti-inflammatory properties of the garlic sprout extract were investigated by evaluating the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E synthase (cPGES), glutathione S transferase (GSTM1), nuclear factor NF-κB, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) protein levels in the RAW 264.7 … Show more

“…There exist many pharmacological reports on the compounds that have been isolated from this plant. For instance, Linolenic acid (1) has been reported to have medicinal properties such as anti-inflammatory (Gdula-Argasińska et al, 2017). Though there are no reported pharmacological activities reported for 1methyl cyclobutene (2), related compounds with cyclobutane ring such as tripartilactum from Streptomyces species have been reported to act as N + /K + ATPase inhibitor (Park et al, 2012).…”

“…KLF2 also mediates acute and chronic inflammations [17, 18]. The anti-inflammatory effects of KLF2 mechanistically are linked to the suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF- κ B) signaling [17, 19] that regulates a variety of genes related to inflammatory responses [20, 21]. Thus, KLF2 may be a key thrombotic regulator due to its effects on regulating both endothelial function and inflammation.…”

“…28 The presence of tryptophan in C has also been previously found in the extracts of garlic sprouts. 29 For organosulfur compounds, a marginal significance of allyl mercaptan is found in S+F, while its precursor, allicin, is relevant in C with high significance. This is attributed to the degradation of alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide) to allicin, 24 whose mechanism can be triggered when the garlic clove is cut and exposed to air.…”
