Anti-Inflammatory Activity of N-Butanol Extract from Ipomoea stolonifera In Vivo and In Vitro

Abstract: Ipomoea stolonifera (I. stolonifera) has been used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases including rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis in Chinese traditional medicine. However, the anti-inflammatory activity of I. stolonifera has not been elucidated. For this reason, the anti-inflammatory activity of n-butanol extract of I. stolonifera (BE-IS) was evaluated in vivo by using acute models (croton oil-induced mouse ear edema, carrageenan-induced rat paw edema, and carrageenan-induced rat pleurisy) and chroni… Show more

“…Inflammation was induced in the right paw by a sub-plantar injection of 0.1 mL of carrageenan 1% (w/v) in saline solution 0.9% (w/v) (Cai et al, 2014). The change in edema was calculated according to the difference in the measured diameter between the non-swollen left paw and right paw treated with carrageenan.…”

“…A variety of steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been developed and used to treat inflammatory diseases. However, prolonged use of these drugs can cause many side effects, including immunodeficiency, gastrointestinal disorders, and humoral disturbances (Simon, 2003;Roth, 2012;Cai et al, 2014). The discovery of new anti-inflammatory agents with few side effects that could be developed for long-term administration remains an outstanding challenge.…”
