Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Microbial Potential of Plumbago zeylanica L.: A Review

Abstract: Plumbago zeylanica L. (Pz) is one of the most important medicinal plant belonging to the family Plumbaginaceae. It is a perennial shrub, growing throughout India and most places of Sri Lanka. It contains various bioactive compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, naphthoquinones, glycoside, saponins, steroids, tri-terpenoids, coumarins, phenolic compounds etc. Of all the chemical constituents, plumbagin is the principal active compound. Plumbagin (5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone-C11H8O3) is primarily presen… Show more

“…P. zeylanica is a pharmacologically important plant. It exhibits broad range of pharmacological activities, which include antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing (Shweta and Dubey, 2015;Singh et al, 2017;Aleem, 2020). G. superba shows oxytocic activity and acts as an early abortifacient, maintains labour, aids the timely removal of placenta, and minimizes post-partum bleeding.…”

“…Plumbagin lowered serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, by 53-86% and 61-91% respectively. It lowered cholesterol / phospholipid ratio by 45.8% and elevated the decreased HDL-cholesterol significantly 77 . Marked reduction was seen with formulation of P. zeylanica and vitamin E. The total cholesterol/HDL and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios were found significantly lowered.…”

“…Medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory properties were selected from the previous literatures (Aleem et al, 2020;Jeewanthi et al, 2020;Jamshed et al, 2019) and potential compounds identified from the selected plants were used as ligands in this study. The 3D structures of the selected ligands namely 6 urs-12-en-24-oic acid (Figure 2a) and β-Amyrin ( Figure 2b) from Plumbago zeylanica, 10,12-Docasadiyndioic Acid ( Figure 2c) and 1(Ethynyltrimethylsilyl-2)-1-Chloro-2-Ethyl-2-methyl cyclopropane (Figure 2d) from Neolitsea cassia, and Androstane (Figure 2e) from Wrightia tinctoria was collected from Pubchem (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.…”
