“…The present findings expanded on a report showing that structural Fe(III) in palygorskite [35] and, to a much lesser extent, sepiolite [36] served as oxidant towards hydrocortisone. A related study reported electrophoretic mobility values for sepiolite, palygorskite, and halloysite suspensions corresponding to −1.44 ± 0.155, −1.24 ± 0.114, and −4.055 ± 0.18 m cm V −1 s −1 [19], confirming an increased charge density for halloysite surfaces. In this light, we explained the higher extent of LP inhibition by CLA-1 vs sepiolite or palygorskite because of concentric dissolution, resulting in the continuous production of highly reactive sites (kinks, edges, sites), enabling silanol groups that stabilize electron deficient species (i.e., HO • ).…”
