Anti-inflammatory Constituents of Mortonia greggii Gray

Abstract: A new phytochemical study of Mortonia greggii (Celastraceae) afforded four friedelan derivatives (1-4), three lupanes (5-7), retusine (8), two esterified polyhydroxyagarofurans (9-10), mortonin C (11) and photomortonin C (12). The anti-inflammatory activity on carrageenan and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate induced models of inflammation, as well as the ability to inhibit the nitric oxide (NO) produced by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages were evaluated for the main metabolites. O… Show more

“…20 and 21) 5.3.2.1. Antiinflammatory and autoimmune conditions: 3-Oxo-friedelan-28-oic acid (70) showed moderate (32%) inhibition of edema in the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema test and good inhibition of TPA-induced rat ear edema (Arciniegas et al, 2004). Polpunonic acid (=polpunoic acid, maytenoic acid, maytenonic acid) (69) inhibited IL-2 release, and wilforic acid B (72) inhibited production of IL-2, IL-8, and TNF-α (Duan et al, 2000).…”

“…The root of Mortonia greggii furnished compounds 62 and 257, which showed moderate inhibition of TPA-induced ear edema and modest effects in anti-inflammatory tests. 106 Compound 257 is an NO inhibitor. 106…”
