Anti-inflammatory effect of Amomum xanthioides in a mouse atopic dermatitis model

Abstract: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disorder. The present study investigated the effects of Amomum xanthioides extract (AXE) on AD‑like skin inflammation using a Dermatophagoides farinae extract (DFE) and 2,4‑dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)‑induced mouse AD model. Hematoxylin and eosin staining results demonstrated that repeated DFE/DNCB exposure markedly increased the thickening of the dermis and epidermis, in addition to the infiltration of eosinophils and mast cells. However, oral ad… Show more

“…In general, AD is an immunological disease resulting from an imbalance favoring type-2 helper T (Th2) cell. Th2 cells, mast cells, or other immune components cells produce interleukin-4 (IL-4), which is known to induce B-cell class switching to IgE [7, 26, 29]. Up-regulation of IgE production is a hallmark of AD in humans [15].…”

“…During the inflammatory process, primary inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β activate the production of secondary inflammatory cytokines like IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-15, IL-17, and IL-18 [29]. TNF-α and IFN-γ stimulation in keratinocytes has been reported to induce inflammatory cytokines and chemokines [30,31]. Thus, inhibiting these inflammatory cytokines is an important target in reducing inflammation.…”

“…e results showed that the volatile oils exhibited moderate activities compared with standard drug, diclofenac [14]. e extracts of A. compactum, A. xanthoides, and A. vilosum also demonstrated their anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in vivo [28][29][30]. Interestingly, there have been very few studies on the Amomum essential oils with anti-inflammation.…”
