Anti-inflammatory Effects of Vitamin E on Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis in Rats

Abstract: Vitamin E (vit-E) is a lipophilic antioxidant, and its anti-inflammatory activity is still not full characterized. Thus, our goal was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of repeated vit-E treatment in the arthritis induced by the intraplantar injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). We observed an increase in arthritis scores, interleukin-1β and H2O2 levels, neutrophil and macrophage infiltration, thermal hyperalgesia, mechanical allodynia, and loss of function induced by intraplantar CFA injecti… Show more

“…In the present study, for the first time, we assessed the effects of vitamin B 1 on the acute phase of CFA-induced inflammation. Our finding was in line with the previous studies showing that CFA-induced inflammation was accompanied by increase in the activities of cytokines (Akhtari, Zaringhalam, Eidi, Manaheji, & Tekieh, 2012; Rossato et al, 2015). …”

“…A number of studies have documented 2 inflammatory phases during the CFA-induced monoarthritis driven by an increase in the secretion of various proinflammatory chemokines like IL-1β and TNF-α, which cause hyperalgesia and edema (Choy, & Panay, 2001; Rossato et al, 2015). In the present study, for the first time, we assessed the effects of vitamin B 1 on the acute phase of CFA-induced inflammation.…”

“…In this model of inflammatory pain, occurs the release of several pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, bradykinin, substance P, and cytokines as interleukins (IL)-1, -8 and tumor necrosis factor (Rossato et al, 2014) and it is sensitive to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as sodium diclofenac (Melo et al, 2013). Moreover, this nociceptive test is used to detect antinociceptive activity of drugs acting on the peripheral, spinal and supraspinal levels (Hardy et al, 1988).…”

“…4C) was decreased by APC, and corroborated its free radical-scavenging activity (Srimani et al, 2009;Mitra et al, 2016). Other natural polyphenols like isorhamnetin, coumarin, Triphala, and Vitamin-E also demonstrated enhanced free radical-scavenging activity (Hemshekhar et al, 2013;Kalaiselvan and Rasool, 2015;Rossato et al, 2015;Wang and Zhong, 2015).…”
