Anti-inflammatory efficacy of Licochalcone A: correlation of clinical potency and in vitro effects

Abstract: Licochalcone A (LicA), a major phenolic constituent of the licorice species Glycyrrhiza inflata, has recently been reported to have anti-inflammatory as well as anti-microbial effects. These anti-inflammatory properties might be exploited for topical applications of LicA. We conducted prospective randomized vehicle-controlled clinical trials to assess the anti-irritative efficacy of cosmetic formulations containing LicA in a post-shaving skin irritation model and on UV-induced erythema formation. The clinical … Show more

“…8 The anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties of licochalcone A (8), present in the roots of Glycyrrhiza species have been described as effective to treat acne. 26,[29][30][31] Interestingly, Pueraria showed an equivalent number of patents and scientific articles. According to literature, Pueraria species have potential skin regenerative activity, however their bioactive compounds remain unknown.…”

“…The topical aqueous leave-on tonic (EUCERIN®-Dermo-Capillaire; Beiersdorf AG, Hamburg, Germany) comprised Glycyrrhiza inflata root extract which contained licochalcone A as active ingredient [17]. Further active ingredients were urea, polidocanol, and lactate (INCI: aqua, urea, methylpropanediol, sodium lactate, laureth-9, Glycyrrhiza inflata root extract, glycerin, lactic acid, arginine HCl, PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, cetrimonium chloride, phenoxyethanol).…”

“…With respect to human skin, licochalcone A exhibited anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and in vivo [16,17]. Topical treatments with formulations consisting of Glycyrrhiza inflata root extract, which contained licochalcone A, demonstrated beneficial effects on human skin in models of skin irritation [17] and in patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea and red facial skin [18]. Also, patients suffering from atopic dermatitis benefited from treatment with licochalcone A [19].…”
