Anti-Müllerian hormone levels and spontaneous pregnancy in women undergoing surgery for benign ovarian cysts

Abstract: This prospective study had the objective to compare anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) serum levels among women with endometriomas and those with other benign ovarian cysts and verify a possible correlation between the AMH post-operative decline and the achievement of pregnancy. The study included 57 women undergoing laparoscopic surgery. Serum levels of AMH were measured preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. AMH serum levels decreased in both endometriomas and other benign cysts, but significant re… Show more

“…Even in women undergoing ovarian surgery for benign ovarian cysts it seems that AMH doesn't have a role in predicting the pregnancy rate. In fact, a study conducted in our department has analysed the preand post-operative AMH values of these women and evaluated the spontaneous onset of pregnancy of those who tried to conceive (26). We obtained a live birth of 37% and found no statistically significant difference in reproductive outcome between women with AMH serum levels lower and higher than 1.1 ng/ml.…”

“…Thus, in cases where the risk of iatrogenic POF development is high, ovarian tissue cryopreservation can be chosen. Regarding surgery for benign ovarian cysts or endometriomas, it has emerged that AMH undergoes a decline 3-6 months after surgery (26,124), but it seems to be statistically significant only in case of endometriomas and the hormone is unable to predict whether an operated woman may or may not have a pregnancy in the future. Furthermore, in the case of endometriotic cysts there was also a recovery of the AMH values at 12 months from the operation (26,125,126).…”

“…Conventionally the large sized ovarian cysts are managed by laparotomy. The latest advancements in endoscopic invasive techniques have presented new potentials for laparoscopic management of such very huge sized ovarian cysts [6]. This study has been conducted to assess the unanimously diagnosis and the surgical outcomes among cases having extremely large ovarian cysts have been reported which were accomplished laparoscopically.…”
